Cycling in Tenerife — your planning guide

Tenerife is one of Europe’s top year-round cycling destinations. This guide helps you choose when to come, what to ride, how to prepare your gearing, and where to rent quality bikes with local support in Puerto de Santiago — minutes from legendary west-coast climbs.

Pickup & base on the island

We do not offer hotel delivery. All rentals are collected at our shop on Av. Quinto Centenario in Puerto de Santiago — ideal for Masca, Teide approaches, and coastal loops.

Iconic climbs & what to expect

Teide from the south and the Masca / Teno roads are bucket-list ascents: long gradients, altitude, and often wind. Start early, carry layers, and use compact gearing with a 32–34t cassette on road bikes.

Shorter punchy climbs around Chirche and the west coast are perfect for half-day efforts when you want serious vertical without a full Teide day.

Best seasons for cycling

October–May is peak training-camp season: mild temperatures, reliable roads, and long daylight for big rides. Summer is rideable early mornings; plan fluids and sun protection.

Christmas and New Year book up fast — reserve bikes and accommodation early.

Weather & wind

Trade winds can be strong on exposed ridges and descents. Check the forecast for Teide above 2,000 m — it can be much cooler than the coast. Afternoon wind is common; many locals start at dawn.

Gearing & bike choice

For Teide and sustained climbing we recommend endurance road geometry, disc brakes if you prefer all-weather control, and low gears (compact chainset + wide cassette).

E-road and e-MTB options help mixed groups enjoy the same routes — see our e-bike rental page for availability.
